A big event is happening in the North Sea, and it’s not just any event. It’s a major naval exercise called Strike Warrior, organized by NATO. The star of the show is the USS Harry S. Truman, a US Navy aircraft carrier, which is joining forces with the Royal Navy’s aircraft carrier, HMS Prince of Wales. They’re not alone, though. Other NATO ships from countries like Norway, Belgium, Germany, Portugal, and the Netherlands are also taking part. The USS Harry S. Truman has made its way to the North Sea after passing through the Strait of Dover. It’s been a while since this carrier and its strike group have been here; the last time was in 2018. The Truman is bringing along a lot of aircraft, including F/A-18E Super Hornets, which the Navy has just finished ordering.
The Royal Navy is also sending its newest carrier, the HMS Prince of Wales, along with F-35B Lightning jets, frigates, destroyers, submarines, helicopters, and tankers. It’s a real team effort, with both the US and British carriers working together with their respective aircraft and support vessels. The Truman is part of Carrier Air Wing 1, which is based in Virginia. This wing includes nine different squadrons with various types of aircraft, like the F/A-18E Super Hornets, E-2D Hawkeyes, and MH-60S Seahawks. However, the Truman isn’t yet ready to use the F-35C fighter jets, so the British F-35Bs will be the only ones at the exercise. Rear Adm. Sean Bailey, who’s in charge of the Truman’s strike group, said that this exercise is a big deal. It shows how committed the US and its allies are to keeping the seas safe and working together. He thinks it’s important to show that no country can handle today’s challenges alone, and that teamwork is key.
