US looks for cultural guides to help troops in Somalia
Somalia, MogadishuTue Jun 02 2026
The American military is hiring advisors to help soldiers understand Somalia’s complex social landscape. These advisors won’t carry guns, but they’ll explain local customs, tribal relationships, and government structures. Their job is to prevent misunderstandings that could turn military operations into bigger problems.
This hiring spree comes as the US has quietly pulled most of its troops out of the region over the last decade. With fewer boots on the ground, intelligence gathering has dropped sharply. Military leaders worry this creates blind spots where extremist groups like ISIS can hide and plan attacks. Even though the US is pulling back, it’s still bombing militant targets in Somalia at a high rate, almost matching last year’s numbers.
The advisors will mostly work from Mogadishu, Somalia’s capital, but they may need to travel to remote areas in Somalia, Djibouti, and Kenya. Their job isn’t just desk work—they’ll face real risks in tough conditions. The role starts in a few months and requires top-level security clearance.
Back in May, the US claimed a major victory by killing a high-ranking ISIS leader in a strike far from Somalia. But experts say extremism isn’t fading—it’s spreading. Groups like al-Shabab, linked to al-Qaeda, still control parts of Somalia. The military’s move to hire cultural advisors suggests they’re trying to fight smarter, not just harder.
