Vaccines have long been our best defense against diseases like COVID-19. But getting people to take them can be tricky, especially in big countries like Nigeria. Most studies in Nigeria overlooked the role of culture and region in vaccine acceptance. This study aimed to fill that gap by exploring vaccine uptake and future intentions among adults living in Nigeria's six geopolitical zones.
In May and June 2022, trained researchers spoke to 1, 148 adults across states with high COVID-19 cases in each zone. They found that about half of these adults hadn't gotten vaccinated yet, 29. 7% were fully vaccinated, and 19. 3% had some but not all vaccine doses. It was interesting to see that most people in the Northern states hadn't received the vaccine.
The study also found that certain factors, like age, sex, where you live, your job, religion, and the region you're from, had a big impact on whether you'd gotten vaccinated or not. Surprisingly, 70% of those who hadn't gotten the vaccine yet said they planned to.
Overall, while more people in the North need to get vaccinated, it's encouraging to see that many still intend to. To reach these people, special efforts are needed in the Northern region.
