vaccines do amazing things. remember the times when diseases like polio and measles were causing trouble? today, vaccines prevent over a million illnesses and save thousands of lives each year. they do this by giving our bodies a sneak peek at dangerous viruses and bacteria so immune systems can fight back effectively. it's like teaching your immune system some really useful moves! surprisingly, some vaccines only reduce the severity of illnesses but still, they're vital in keeping us safe from deadly outcomes.
dr. jon lapook from cbs news explained that vaccines save about 2-3 million lives globally each year. taking a look back, vaccines have saved around 154 million lives worldwide in the past 50 years. wow, right? but lately, folks skipping shots have led to a rise in diseases like measles, and even polio made a comeback in new york in 2022.
polio was a nightmare that left many kids paralyzed, but thanks to vaccines, it's almost gone from the u. s. since the 1950s. measles, too, was a big problem in the 1960s, with thousands of kids hospitalized and around 500 dying each year. the mmr vaccine changed all that. and let's not forget rubella, which was especially dangerous during pregnancy. now, with vaccines like mmr, we've got strong protection.
