Virginia has turned to the U. S. Supreme Court to overturn a decision that blocks the state from removing 1, 600 voters it suspects are noncitizens. A federal appeals court recently upheld a lower court's ruling that these voters were incorrectly removed. Virginia's Republican Governor, Glenn Youngkin, ordered the daily checks of Department of Motor Vehicles data against voter rolls to find noncitizens. But the court said this process didn't prove that those removed weren't citizens.
The Justice Department and some private groups sued, arguing that the 'quiet period' before elections should protect voters from mistakes. This appeals court case isn't the first. A similar case in Alabama forced the state to reinstate over 3, 000 voters mistakenly deemed noncitizens. Now, Virginia wants the Supreme Court to step in, saying restoring these voters could cause confusion and extra work right before the election.
