Virginia's Democratic lawmakers have introduced a bill aimed at promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in public school education. This move comes as Democrats gain control of the state legislature and governor's office. The bill, HB 614, was filed by Del. Sam Rasoul of Roanoke. It seeks to revise history and social science standards to include the perspectives and experiences of historically marginalized communities. These communities encompass racial and ethnic minorities, immigrants, women, individuals with disabilities, LGBTQ+ people, and more. The bill does not specify the exact content of the new curriculum. However, it sets a deadline for the state to implement these changes by March 1, 2027. By this date, the new instructional materials and curriculum guidelines must be in place to include the political, economic, social, and cultural contributions of these communities.
Teachers will also be required to have materials to observe various heritage months, such as Black History Month, Women's History Month, and LGBTQ+ History Month. The Department of Historic Resources will coordinate with experts from universities and community organizations to develop the new curriculum. They will also ensure that the new content is integrated across all subjects and not confined to specific months or observances. Critics of the bill argue that it promotes a particular political agenda. Supporters, however, believe it will provide a more comprehensive and accurate understanding of history.
