In a quick move, the Supreme Court's conservative justices let Virginia continue its voter registration purge. This comes after a federal judge found the state illegally removed over 1, 600 voters in the last two months. Virginia says it's targeting non-citizens, but critics worry that American citizens are being unfairly kicked off the voting rolls.
The justices didn't explain their decision, which is common in these cases. They sided with Virginia's Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin, who's been pushing for this purge. He points out that Virginia has same-day registration, so voters can still cast their ballots.
Voting by non-citizens is rare, but it's been a big topic this year. Former President Trump has been talking about it a lot. He even criticized an earlier court ruling that blocked Virginia's purge.
The state says it's checking driver's license data against voter rolls to find non-citizens. But some groups say this is causing problems for legitimate voters. One woman, Nadra Wilson, told a news outlet she was born in the U. S. and has a passport, yet her name was removed.
A federal judge said Virginia can still remove names one by one, but not in a big sweep. She ordered the state to tell affected voters and local officials that their registrations are back.
In Alabama, a similar situation happened. A judge ordered the state to restore more than 3, 200 voters who were wrongly labeled as ineligible non-citizens.
