In the small town of Amite, an attorney has flagged a big problem with voter registrations. Michelle Charles, who represents mayoral candidate Ayana Buchanan, believes over 40 people are registered to vote using business addresses instead of their homes. This isn't supposed to happen. The issue is coming to light just before a big election. Amite voters will choose a police chief, a mayor, and four city council members. Charles thinks these 40 votes could make a big difference in such a small town of 4, 000 people.
Charles has a hearing set for November 5 to discuss her concerns. She thinks the Tangipahoa Registrar of Voters should have spotted these incorrect registrations. After all, everyone knows everyone in a small community, right? Some of these voters don't even have homestead exemptions in Amite, which means they might not actually live there. So, why should they be deciding who leads the community?
