Wally Schirra was a pioneering astronaut who made history by flying on three different NASA space missions: Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo. Born into a family with a love for aviation, Schirra's journey began in 1945 when he graduated from the US Naval Academy. After serving in the military, he became a test pilot and eventually joined NASA's elite Mercury 7 group in 1959.
Schirra's first mission was the Sigma 7 flight, part of the Mercury-Atlas 8 mission. This flight orbited Earth six times, traveling over 144, 000 miles at a speed of 17, 557 miles per hour. He named his spacecraft Sigma 7, honoring the collaborative efforts of scientists and engineers.
In 1965, Schirra was the backup command pilot for Gemini 3, the first two-astronaut mission. Later, he commanded Gemini 6, a mission that tested rendezvous capabilities and spacecraft systems. His final mission was Apollo 7, which tested the Apollo spacecraft and included the first live TV broadcast from space.
Despite his achievements, Schirra was deeply affected by the Apollo 1 fire that killed his friend Gus Grissom. He prioritized crew safety and left NASA after the Apollo 7 mission. Schirra's legacy includes numerous awards and books, and he is remembered as the only astronaut to fly in all three pioneering space missions.
