Washington’s Golf Courses Get a Fresh Start Under New Plan
Washington D.C., USASun May 10 2026
The U. S. capital’s public golf scene is getting a shake-up. Two of Washington, D. C. ’s well-known golf courses—Langston and Rock Creek Park—will now be run by a non-profit group under a long-term lease. The third, East Potomac Golf Links, will stay open for now but will eventually undergo major changes during a major renovation led by the National Park Service.
This deal replaces an earlier agreement that was canceled last year. Some observers saw that cancellation as part of a bigger push to reshape the city’s public spaces. But officials say all three courses will remain open while the plans move forward. The National Links Trust, a non-profit, will take charge of Langston and Rock Creek, likely bringing fresh ideas to how they’re managed and improved.
East Potomac Golf Links is in a unique spot. It sits near the water and has faced challenges over the years. Right now, it’s still running under temporary terms. But once the renovation starts, it could look and play differently. The National Park Service calls it a “historic restoration, ” meaning big changes are coming.
Critics worry about losing control of public spaces. Golfers and locals might wonder if these changes will make the courses more or less accessible. Supporters argue that new management could bring better resources and upgrades. Either way, the next few years will shape how these golf courses fit into the city’s future.
