Waste Turns into Cheap Methanol: A New Fuel Game Changer

HyOrc Corporation has announced that its system for turning municipal trash into methanol could cost only about €350 to €370 per tonne. The calculation comes after an independent lab, Bureau Veritas, confirmed the plant’s performance and after HyOrc ran its own engineering studies. The company’s model is clever: it uses the money that waste companies normally pay to dispose of garbage—called tipping fees—as part of the fuel’s price. This means the waste itself can help cover the cost of building and running the plant. Current market prices for methanol are higher than HyOrc’s estimate, especially in Europe where suppliers like Methanex sell it for more. Because of this price gap, the company believes its fuel could compete well against traditional methanol, and it may even sell at a premium if the product is certified as low‑carbon.HyOrc is already moving forward with two pilot plants. In Porto, Portugal a small 35‑tonne‑per‑day plant will convert refuse into eight tonnes of methanol each day. In Varna, Bulgaria a larger 150‑tonne‑per‑day plant will produce 38 tonnes of methanol daily. Both sites have land, permits and local partners lined up, so the projects can start soon. “Now that an external body has validated our process, we are ready to show the market how strong it really is, ” said HyOrc’s CEO. “We want a system that mixes good waste economics with clean fuel, and we see growing demand for alternative marine fuels. ” The figures given are still early. Final costs will depend on detailed engineering, financing deals and the exact mix of waste fed into the plant. HyOrc is still working on project plans, funding talks and commercial contracts to support its future roll‑out.
