Emerging contaminants (ECs) are pollutants that have started to show up in our waterways. They come from things like personal care products, antibiotics, painkillers, hormone disruptors, and even psychiatric medications. Scientists have gotten better at finding these pollutants, but we still need more data on where they are, what rules exist to control them, and how they affect our health.
Scientists looked at various water sources, including treated wastewater, rivers, underground water, and sometimes even drinking water. They checked the levels of these ECs, what rules were in place to handle them, and their effects on health. They also tested different treatments to see which worked best. For most of these pollutants, combining ozone and gamma radiation was the most effective way to remove them.
The study found that some regions were riskier than others. For example, South America, Europe, and Asia had many risks linked to estrogen and Bisphenol A, a common chemical in plastics. The study's results show that we need better rules worldwide to keep these pollutants out of our water.
