Wearable technology has the potential to be a game-changer for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and their caregivers. These devices can monitor stress levels using physiological signals, which is crucial for people with ASD who often face intense stressful situations. However, designing wearable devices for this group requires special considerations. People with ASD might be sensitive to certain accessories, making comfort and user-friendliness key factors. We reviewed 31 articles from various databases to find out how wearables are used for stress detection in ASD.
Most studies focused on heart activity, using techniques like photoplethysmography (PPG) and electrocardiography (ECG). But there's a catch: small study groups, varying conditions, and the need for customized stress detection algorithms pose challenges. Each person with ASD is unique, so stress thresholds also need to be tailored. While the future of wearable solutions in ASD stress monitoring looks promising, there are hurdles to overcome. We need devices that are both easy to use and unobtrusive. Plus, integrating these technologies into broader care plans is essential.
