Weather in Boston: Rain Today, Maybe Snow Later

This morning, Boston woke up to temperatures that were not as chilly as expected. After yesterday's high of 60°F (15°C), the air didn't cool down much overnight. As a result, most of the area is seeing rain instead of snow this Wednesday. However, there are exceptions. Higher elevations in northern Worcester County and parts of southwestern New Hampshire might get some snow accumulation. This is because the cold air is settling just right in those areas.
You might be wondering why this is happening. Well, it's similar to what happens out West. Snowfall there depends on elevation, with lower areas mostly getting rain. This pattern seems to be becoming more common in our region as winters become milder.
After today's system passes, temperatures will drop to the 40s on Thursday and even lower on Friday. There's also a developing storm near Nantucket that could bring some light snow showers by Friday night. But the main part of the storm will head toward the Maritime Provinces, dumping more snow there.
Through the weekend, Boston will feel the chill, with highs barely reaching the mid-20s°F (-6°C). But don't worry, just in time for the holidays, temperatures should inch back toward 40°F (4°C) as storms stay away.
