Weather Warnings Reach 69 Million in Many Languages

Urbana-Champaign, Illinois, USATue Jun 02 2026
The National Weather Service is now sending storm alerts to 69 million people in a variety of languages, including Spanish, Chinese, Vietnamese and Samoan. This shift comes after researchers used artificial intelligence to speed up translations of forecast messages. In the past, bilingual forecasters had to translate alerts manually while juggling other tasks. Now a machine‑learning system handles the translation, allowing experts to focus on accuracy and safety.
The new approach delivers life‑saving information to 68. 8 million people who do not speak English at home. The study, published in the journal Artificial Intelligence for the Earth Systems, shows how technology can boost public protection. University of Illinois Urbana‑Champaign partners with the NWS’s communication team to keep messages clear and easy to understand. The project demonstrates that rapid, reliable translations can make emergency information more accessible for diverse communities.
