What keeps people happy when they fear death?
Tue Mar 24 2026
Many people worry about death—not just older adults, but even young people. Research shows that religion, morals, and spirituality can help reduce that fear. But scientists wondered which of these three factors works best.
They studied 737 adults aged 18 to 80, mostly women, and measured their levels of religious, moral, and spiritual intelligence. Spiritual intelligence stood out as the strongest defense against death anxiety. Unlike religious or moral beliefs, spiritual intelligence directly lowered fear and indirectly boosted life satisfaction. In other words, people who scored higher in spiritual intelligence felt less afraid of death and were generally happier.
Interestingly, the study found no major differences between men and women in how these factors worked. Everyone benefited equally when spiritual intelligence was strong. The results suggest that spiritual intelligence might be more important than religion or morality when it comes to handling fear and improving well-being.
Still, the research only looked at one moment in time. Future studies could explore how these factors change as people age or face other challenges.
