When Alaska starts warning about summer heat
Anchorage, Alaska, USASat May 09 2026
Alaska is getting ready for a new kind of weather warning. Normally, people think of wild winds or heavy snow when they hear weather alerts. But now, forecasters will also issue heat advisories for Anchorage and parts of southern Alaska as temperatures climb higher than usual.
The change is partly to keep up with standards already in place in other parts of the state like Fairbanks and Juneau. It also comes as Alaska’s climate changes, making heat a growing concern. Unlike places where 90-degree days are normal, Alaska rarely sees such highs. Instead, the thresholds for advisories are much lower—between 70 and 80 degrees—because locals aren’t used to even moderate warmth.
Homes and buildings in Alaska were built to stay warm during long winters, not to cool down in summer. Many lack air conditioning, so heat builds up inside quickly when temperatures rise. Even during the summer’s near-constant daylight, these structures trap warmth instead of letting it escape. Add to that the problem of wildfire smoke, which forces people to keep windows closed, and staying cool becomes harder.
Research shows that Alaskans face higher health risks at temperatures considered mild in other parts of the country. When the mercury hits 70, some residents already start feeling the effects. Average summer temperatures aren't rising as fast as winter or fall temperatures, but the number of unusually warm days is steadily increasing.
Forecasters also note that warmer nights are becoming more common. That means homes have less time to cool off after hot days, making heat-related problems more likely. Though Alaska has seen extreme heat in the past, these advisories will help share early warnings about risky warmth before it becomes dangerous.
The goal isn’t just to issue alerts but to prepare people for a new kind of summer challenge. Staying hydrated and checking on neighbors will become important as the climate shifts.
