When sports betting rules get broken, the fallout affects everyone
New York, USAWed Apr 29 2026
Two former Fordham basketball players now face permanent exclusion from college sports after an investigation linked them to a betting scandal. Elijah Gray and Will Richardson were found to have talked about throwing a game for cash, though only Gray admitted some involvement. The NCAA stepped in after a third party overheard the players discussing the plan, which led to state gaming officials tracking suspicious bets on a February 2024 match.
Records show someone placed a $10, 000 wager that Fordham’s opponent would win that exact game. Investigators later noticed both players followed the suspected bettor on social media. Gray eventually admitted he exchanged messages with a former NBA player and the bettor about accepting $10, 000 to $15, 000 to lose. He claimed he backed out at the last minute, played normally, and Fordham still won.
Richardson took a different approach. He refused to cooperate with NCAA probes, denied knowing the bettor, and even claimed he never spoke with Gray about the matter. Still, phone logs showed he reached out to another teammate after investigators interviewed him. Gray, meanwhile, admitted he broke rules by sharing info with a bettor but said he never went through with the plan.
The NCAA treats their actions as serious violations, labeling them Level 1 ethical breaches. During the 2023-24 season, Gray averaged 8. 2 points across 32 games as a sophomore. Richardson played 27. 1 minutes per game, scoring 9. 8 points on average. Their stats won’t mean much now, though, since both are banned from future competition.
