Another school shooting has happened. This time, it was at Annunciation Catholic Church in Minneapolis. It's the first of the new school year, but sadly, it won't be the last. Last year, there were over two dozen school shootings. Kids should be safe at school, but they're not. They're running, hiding, and sometimes, they don't make it out alive.
We keep using words like "tragic" and "heartbreaking, " but they don't mean much anymore. Minnesota's Governor, Tim Walz, said it best: "There shouldn't be words for these types of incidents since they should not happen. "
Matthew DeBoer, the principal of Annunciation Catholic School, planned this school year's theme around hope. But after this shooting, he said, "There's nothing that happened today that can fill us with hope. " He lost two students, two "angels, " as he called them.
DeBoer urged people to do more than just pray. He quoted an African proverb: "When you pray, move your feet. " He asked for support for the community, the children, the families, and the teachers. He wants to make sure this doesn't happen again.
Archbishop Bernard Hebda echoed this sentiment. He said that prayer is important, but action is too. The church bell rang as he spoke, reminding everyone that prayer is a call to action. He believes that action is what will make a difference and bring hope.
