Canada is facing a shortage of geriatricians, and this problem is only getting worse. These doctors are vital for looking after the health of older adults. To understand why new geriatricians choose their first practice location, we conducted a survey in 2023. Imagine you're a young doctor specializing in geriatric medicine. Where would you want to start your career? Would it be a bustling city or a small town? This choice can greatly impact the elderly patients you serve. The survey found some interesting patterns. For instance, trainees and recent graduates were more likely to choose urban areas. Why? Perhaps it's because cities offer more job opportunities and a wider range of healthcare facilities.On the other hand, some factors might steer new geriatricians towards rural areas. Maybe they want to escape the hustle and bustle of city life, or perhaps they're drawn to the tight-knit communities often found in small towns. Additionally, rural practices might offer more flexibility and a closer relationship with patients. But it's not just about personal preferences. Factors like family considerations and the availability of continuing education opportunities also play a significant role. This study sheds light on the factors that influence where new geriatricians set up their first practice. Understanding these determinants can help healthcare policymakers address the growing shortage of geriatricians in Canada.
