Where your kids get the best healthcare might surprise you

A new study looks at how well each state supports children’s health, but the results aren’t always what you’d expect. Most kids have insurance, yet families still struggle with big bills—on average, parents pay around $6, 850 a year just to cover their children under work-based plans. That shows having coverage doesn’t always mean care comes cheap. The rankings came from checking three key areas: whether kids can actually see doctors, eat well and stay active, and how their teeth are doing. Researchers scored each state out of 100 using 33 different measures, pulling data from places like the CDC and the U. S. Census. They wanted to see not just who has insurance, but who really gets good, affordable care.
Massachusetts took the top spot, thanks to strong doctor access and very healthy eating habits among kids. Only 1. 6 percent of children there lack insurance, which is the lowest rate in the country. Kids also drink less soda than anywhere else, and infant deaths are among the fewest nationwide. Just behind Massachusetts, Rhode Island did well because families there rarely face medical debt for their children’s care. The state also has more children’s hospitals per person and most toddlers get their full set of shots. Connecticut landed in third place, with the highest number of kids’ doctors per person and nearly all young children vaccinated on time. The state also has fewer kids eating too little fruit and better access to fresh, healthy food. Vermont and Hawaii rounded out the top five in the study. At the bottom were Mississippi, Arizona, Alaska, Montana, and Kentucky. These states scored lowest when it came to access to care, nutrition, and oral health. The gap shows that even with insurance, some places make it much harder for families to keep their kids healthy without breaking the bank.
