Voters in State Board of Education District 12 have a tough decision. Both candidates, Republican Pam Little and Democrat George King, are knowledgeable and experienced educators. Little has been on the board since 2018 and is currently vice chair. She's proud of the board's work in strengthening career and technology education. There are now over 300 approved courses! Plus, phonics and cursive writing are back in schools.
But last year, there was a disagreement about science textbooks. Some were rejected due to their take on fossil fuels and climate change. Little wanted students to learn about Texas' oil industry, which funds schools. King thinks politics influenced the decision.
Little doesn't always agree with conservative views. She ignores messages from political operatives telling her how to vote. She also disagrees with Commissioner of Education Mike Morath on some issues. She wants the education agency under the board's authority, not the governor's appointee.
King focuses on inclusivity. He believes students succeed when they feel included. Both candidates care about Texas students. Little's willingness to stand against party pressures gives her our recommendation. But remember, both are great choices!
