White House Ballroom Clash: Court Halt vs. Trump’s Push
Washington, D.C., USASun Apr 05 2026
A judge told the Trump team to stop work on a new ballroom at the White House, claiming the construction could pose security risks. The administration responded by filing an emergency appeal to undo that ruling, arguing the pause makes the presidential residence “open and exposed. ”
The judge’s decision came after a lawsuit was filed by a historic‑preservation group that says the project, worth $400 million, needs Congressional approval. The case was brought because Trump demolished a historic wing in 2019 and began building the ballroom on its site.
The judge, appointed by former President George W. Bush, paused the construction for 14 days to let Trump’s team appeal. He said the federal court lacked the power to hear a suit based on one person’s subjective taste in architecture.
The emergency motion says the preservation group has no legal standing and that Trump has full authority to renovate the White House. The appeal also claims the group’s arguments are “legally baseless. ”
The new ballroom is part of a larger plan to reshape Washington’s historic core, which includes a 250‑foot arch and other changes at the Kennedy Center. The East Wing, built in 1902 and expanded during Franklin D. Roosevelt’s era, was the site of the new construction.
