Who runs Anchorage? The city's leaders don't match its diverse population

Anchorage, Mountain View, USAFri Jun 12 2026
Anchorage calls itself one of America’s most diverse cities, yet its local government looks nothing like its population. Mountain View, a neighborhood here packed with different cultures, even hosts some of the country’s most varied schools. Anyone walking those school halls would reasonably expect the city council to reflect that same mix of backgrounds. Instead, the Assembly remains overwhelmingly white, a pattern that doesn’t match the reality of everyday life in Alaska’s largest city. The problem isn’t that qualified people of color don’t exist. Several community leaders with deep local experience have shown real skill and dedication, yet none sit on the Assembly. Why? The pay probably plays a role. At $60, 000 a year, the base salary forces most candidates to juggle second jobs just to get by. In New York, city council members make nearly three times that amount. Adjusting Assembly pay to match the workload could make the role more appealing to people who can’t afford to work for free.
Running for office isn’t just about money—it’s about who gets invited into the conversation. Many people of color lack the established connections to unions, political circles, or business leaders that often back candidates. Without those networks, promising leaders struggle to even get their names on the ballot. Cities like Portland recognize this gap and pay their council members what the job demands. Anchorage still hasn’t matched that standard. Young residents deserve to see their own faces in leadership. When classrooms are full of different languages and backgrounds, but the Assembly stays the same, it sends a message that some voices don’t count. If Anchorage truly wants to represent everyone, it needs to actively seek out and support diverse candidates. The future of the city depends on leaders who understand the needs of all its people.
