President Donald Trump hinted that he might have already picked someone to lead the Federal Reserve. He mentioned that he had three candidates initially, but now it's down to one or two. Trump also said he liked the idea of keeping Kevin Hassett, his economic advisor, in his current role. He praised Hassett for being great on TV.
Trump named three people he was considering for the Fed chair position: Rick Rieder from BlackRock, Christopher Waller, and Kevin Warsh. He said all three were good, but Rieder made a strong impression during his interview.
Trump has been critical of the current Fed chair, Jerome Powell. He thinks Powell waited too long to lower interest rates and didn't lead the Fed well. Trump also mentioned that he wanted a Fed chair like Alan Greenspan, who served for a long time. He believes that strong economic growth doesn't always mean higher interest rates.
Greenspan and other former finance officials recently spoke out against the Trump administration's investigation into Powell. They think the Fed should make decisions based on what's best for the public, not what the president wants.
Powell was nominated by Trump in 2017 and reappointed by President Joe Biden. Trump said Powell's life might not be very happy if he chooses to stay until 2028, when his term ends. Powell hasn't said what he plans to do.
