Wisconsin is experiencing a significant surge in whooping cough cases, prompting health officials to urge residents to get their vaccinations up to date. This respiratory illness, also known as pertussis, can lead to serious complications, especially for infants. Symptoms often start with a cold-like appearance, but can rapidly escalate into a violent cough that makes it hard to breathe. As of September 13th, the state has reported 625 confirmed cases of whooping cough, a stark contrast to the mere 51 cases recorded in 2023. Two-thirds of Wisconsin counties have seen at least one case since the start of the year. This outbreak is worrying health experts, who emphasize the importance of vaccination in preventing the spread of the disease. Dr. Stephanie Schauer, the Department of Health Services' Immunization Program Manager, notes that it's not uncommon for Wisconsin to experience more cases of whooping cough than other states. However, this year's surge is unprecedented, with a tenfold increase in reported cases compared to 2023.
"The best way to protect yourself and others is to stay up to date on your vaccines," Dr. Schauer explains. "Whooping cough can be very serious, especially for infants. Vaccination is key to preventing the spread of this illness. " The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends different vaccine doses for various age groups. Children should receive five doses of the DTaP vaccine between the ages of 2 months and 6 years, while adolescents aged 11-12 should receive one dose of Tdap. Adults who have never had a pertussis vaccine should receive one dose of Tdap, and pregnant women should receive Tdap between 27-36 weeks of pregnancy to protect their newborns. In addition to vaccination, health officials recommend practicing good hygiene to avoid getting sick. This includes washing hands with soap and water for 20 seconds, avoiding touching your face, and staying home when you're sick. In Jefferson County, health officials have recently reported a surge in cases over the last few months, emphasizing the need for residents to take action.
