Why CareDx is betting its future on diagnostics and dropping some baggage
Brisbane, California, USAFri Apr 17 2026
CareDx just decided to sell off one of its smaller businesses so it can double down on the parts that are actually making money. The company’s president once said the division being sold—Lab Products, which makes test kits used worldwide—operates differently from the rest of their business. That’s become a problem. CareDx’s real strength lies in its U. S. -based testing services and digital tools, where revenue jumped up to 48% and 33% in just one year. Keeping a money-losing side project around doesn’t make sense when other parts of the company are growing fast.
The sale isn’t just about getting rid of clutter. CareDx will walk away with $170 million in cash and a six-month hand-off period. In return, the buyer gets a unit that handles PCR and next-generation sequencing tests that aren’t selling as well. Meanwhile, CareDx secures a key deal: permanent rights to sell certain post-transplant monitoring tests in North America, which could lock down long-term demand. It’s a clean swap—cash for control.
This move isn’t random. CareDx’s recent quarter shows why change was needed. Overall revenue hit $118 million, a huge 39% jump from last year. Testing services brought in most of that cash, while lab products barely scraped $10 million. The company isn’t just surviving—it’s thriving, with more tests being done and higher prices per test. But profits aren’t the only reason they’re making this shift. They plan to use the cash to buy other businesses that fit their long-term vision of precision diagnostics.
Even the stock market reacted. Shares jumped nearly 29% on the news, showing investors like what they see. CareDx still has $198 million sitting in cash and plans to share exact growth plans in a few weeks. The decision to drop underperforming assets while grabbing a strategic licensing deal might just be the smartest move they’ve made.
