Officials in Germany are scratching their heads, trying to figure out why a man decided to rent a big SUV and plow it into the bustling Christmas market near Magdeburg's city hall. Holger Munch, the boss of Germany's domestic security agency, revealed that they had been keeping an eye on the suspect. Saudi Arabia had sent a warning about him in November 2023, but it was too vague to take seriously.
Munch explained that the authorities didn't think the suspect was capable of violence. The state police in Saxony-Anhalt, which includes Magdeburg, had even questioned the Saudi doctor after the warning but closed the case. They didn't see him as an Islamic extremist or a threat.
This incident has people questioning how well authorities can predict and prevent such attacks. Everyone wants to know what went wrong and how to stop something like this from happening again.
