Why Double Standards Hurt Feminism

Feminism promotes independence, choice, and freedom from objectification. Yet, when it comes to women in politics, things get confusing. Democratic women are often praised, while Republicans face criticism. Take Usha Vance, wife of Senator J. D. Vance. She's highly educated and supports her husband, but media frequently questions her decisions. They even suggest she might be sociopathic for her loyalty! It's a stark contrast to how Democratic spouses like Gwen Walz are treated.
Consistency is lacking in these critiques. Usha Vance's independence aligns well with feminist goals, but her support for her husband is seen negatively. Similarly, Ginni Thomas, wife of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, faces backlash for her political views. Melania Trump, too, was under scrutiny, with many assuming her marriage was miserable. But in reality, she has her own opinions.
Michelle Obama is fondly remembered for her marriage to Barack Obama, while Doug Emhoff, Kamala Harris's husband, is praised for not differing from his wife's views. It shows that support from a spouse is celebrated when it aligns with Democratic values.
Usha Vance, with her education and resilience, is a great example of independent womanhood. She's choosing her path freely, which should be the norm. Instead, we see double standards at play, hurting the true ideals of feminism.
