Why Is Reading So Hard to Teach?
Pennsylvania, USASat Jun 13 2026
Hey, have you ever wondered why some kids just click with reading, but others struggle no matter what? It is a huge problem right now. Many young people across the country are having trouble figuring out how to read well. This means the teachers who prepare future educators need better training too.
A big new study looked closely at college programs in Pennsylvania that train teachers. They wanted to know if these schools were teaching modern, research-based methods for literacy. The results were pretty confusing. Some colleges did a fantastic job and earned top marks. But just as many schools fell way short of meeting basic standards.
What does "good" reading instruction even look like? For ages, some schools used methods that focused on enjoying stories above everything else. But experts now agree: kids need hands-on practice connecting sounds to letters. This structured approach, known as the science of reading, teaches students exactly how language works. It focuses on five key areas: phonics, vocabulary, comprehension, fluency, and knowing individual speech sounds.
The evaluation team checked if teacher programs were covering these five pillars. They also looked out for old tricks that scientists have proven don't really work well anymore, like guessing words based on context alone. Programs scoring high meant they included all the core components. Those scoring low often missed entire skills or taught outdated ideas.
This situation shows a big gap between what we know is best and what future teachers are learning in some state colleges. Even though PA has moved toward requiring this scientific approach, not all universities are keeping up with the pace of change. Some schools argue that these outside evaluations aren't fair because they only review paperwork.
But shouldn't accountability be more than just a suggestion? Experts say states need to step up their game. They should create strong rules about how much training is required and ensure that teacher licensing tests actually reflect current best practices, not old habits. If we want our kids to succeed, the system that trains their teachers has to change completely.
