Recent research from Harvard and MIT revealed a surprising connection between red meats and our brain health. Scientists discovered that consuming a lot of processed red meats, like hot dogs and bacon, can increase your risk of dementia by 13%. This study, published in "Neurology, " tracked the eating habits of thousands of older adults over many years.
Nutritionist Sue-Ellen Anderson-Hayes explains that processed red meats can cause inflammation, leading to plaque buildup in our arteries. This inflammation doesn't just raise the risk of heart disease and stroke, but also dementia. However, the news isn't all bad. Unprocessed red meats, such as burgers and steaks, don't seem to have as much of an impact on cognitive decline.
Anderson-Hayes suggests that replacing processed meats with healthier options like legumes, fish, and nuts might lower the risk of dementia by nearly 20%. These healthier choices can improve blood flow to the brain, helping it stay sharp.
But scientists warn that while diet plays a role, understanding dementia fully requires more large, long-term studies. After all, our brains are complex, and many factors contribute to their health.
