Why sitting too much could be harming Morocco’s health
MoroccoFri May 15 2026
Sitting around too much is quietly becoming one of Morocco’s biggest health threats. As people spend more time parked in chairs—whether at work, in cars, or at home—health experts worry about the rise of long-term illnesses that don’t spread from person to person. These illnesses, called noncommunicable diseases, include heart disease, diabetes, and certain cancers. Research now suggests that lack of movement might be a bigger cause than many realize.
In Morocco, scientists looked closely at how much physical inactivity adds to these diseases. They found that how little people move explains a chunk of health problems in the country. The study also noticed that women and those who exercise the least face higher risks. This isn’t just about gym routines—even small daily movements, like walking to the store or taking stairs, can make a difference.
But why does this matter? Most of these diseases aren’t caused by germs or infections. Instead, they build up over time due to habits like sitting too long. Unlike flu or COVID, they develop slowly and are hard to treat once they take hold. The findings suggest that encouraging people to stand up more often could prevent a lot of suffering down the road.
