You’ve probably heard people talking about “moon face” on TikTok. They say it happens when you’re really stressed, and your face swells up. But is stress really to blame? Let’s break it down.
Dr. Rajani Katta, a dermatologist at Baylor College of Medicine, says the stress hormone cortisol can indeed rise during stress. However, it usually doesn’t get high enough to cause a “moon face. ” Fluid retention can come from many things, like your diet or medical conditions such as kidney disease. Even some medicines can make your face puffy.
True “moon face” is often linked to Cushing’s syndrome, where your body has super high cortisol levels. This can happen if you’re taking certain steroids or if your adrenal glands are overactive. Besides a round face, Cushing’s can also cause a fatty hump between your shoulders and extra fat around your neck and body.
Even though everyday stress might not make your face swell, cortisol can harm your skin in other ways. It can trigger breakouts, dull your skin, speed up aging, and make skin conditions like eczema worse. High cortisol levels can also stop your skin from making collagen and other important substances that keep your skin healthy.
When you’re stressed, you might reach for salty snacks. Too much salt can make your face, eyes, and even your legs and feet swell. Eating too much sugar and processed carbs can also damage your skin over time. Foods with antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties can help protect your skin.
To reduce stress and improve your skin, try exercising, yoga, or meditation. These can lower your cortisol levels and make you feel better. Also, get enough sleep. During deep sleep, your body releases a hormone that helps your skin renew itself.
