A significant winter storm is heading towards Massachusetts, bringing a mix of snow, rain, and ice. The state is preparing for a cold and wet weekend, with the heaviest snowfall expected on Friday night.
Western Massachusetts, particularly Hampden County, is under a winter weather advisory from 7 p. m. Friday until 10 a. m. Saturday. Areas like Pittsfield could see up to 7 inches of snow, while Springfield might get between 3 and 5 inches. Worcester is expected to receive between 1 and 3 inches, and Boston and Cape Cod & the Islands will likely see less than an inch.
The storm is expected to intensify quickly, with snowfall rates reaching up to 2 or 3 inches per hour during its peak. Most of the snow bands should move out of the state by 5 a. m. on Saturday, but a few snow showers could linger until 7 a. m. in Eastern Massachusetts.
Looking ahead, another storm system could bring a wintry mix to the state on Sunday night. Freezing rain is possible, but most areas are expected to see more rain than snow. Ice accumulations should remain under one-tenth of an inch.
Residents are advised to stay informed about the weather and take necessary precautions. It's important to remember that winter storms can be unpredictable, and conditions can change rapidly. Stay safe and be prepared for potential travel disruptions and power outages.
