The Writers Guild of America (WGA) has voiced strong opposition to the planned merger between Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery, calling it a major threat to writers, viewers and the industry at large.
The guild’s joint statement from its East and West branches argues that combining two of the biggest film, TV and streaming companies would eliminate competition and hurt creators.
They say that the loss of rivalry could “be a disaster” for everyone involved, and urge regulators to block the deal.
This stance echoes earlier concerns raised when Netflix bought Warner Bros. , with the WGA labeling that move a violation of antitrust rules.
Other Hollywood unions have shown worry about the merger, but none has taken a firm stand like the WGA.
In January, DGA President Christopher Nolan noted that an independent buyer and distributor would be best for members, yet acknowledged the union is still assessing the situation’s reality.
The guild’s criticism highlights fears that a larger corporate takeover could reduce creative freedom, lower pay and limit job opportunities for writers across the industry.
The outcome of this merger will likely reshape how stories are made and who gets to tell them.
