Colon cancer in young adults is a growing concern. Researchers noticed that these cases are often diagnosed at later stages and are more aggressive. Obesity, family history, inflammatory bowel disease, and symptoms like stomach pain and rectal bleeding seem to be linked. A study looked at nearly 319, 000 US cases between 2015 and 2021. About 17, 000 were young adults. Colorectal cancer rates have risen in people under 50 since the ’90s. It was once mostly an older adult issue. But now, rates in younger adults have increased by 15% over the last 20 years.
Many young adults with colon cancer are non-Hispanic black. Factors like obesity, a sedentary lifestyle, diet, and pollution might be to blame. Researchers want to understand why this is happening. The US Preventive Services Task Force changed screening guidelines to start at age 45. Young people with colon cancer face anxiety about their health, career, and family plans. More support programs are needed.
