Violence is a big problem for young adults in many parts of the world. It affects their health and safety. Young men, especially those aged 18-24, are often both victims and perpetrators of this violence. Growing up in a violent environment can have lasting effects. If a young man experiences or sees violence as a child, he is more likely to use violence as an adult. This is true in many countries, not just one or two.
A recent study looked at data from eight countries. These countries are in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. The study found that a lot of young men have hurt others physically or sexually at some point in their lives. The numbers varied by country. For example, in one country, about 12% of young men had done this. In another, it was almost 45%. The study also found that if a young man was hurt or saw violence at home or in his community as a child, he was more likely to use violence as an adult. This was true even after considering other factors. So, what can be done? Preventing violence in childhood might be key. If we can make homes and communities safer for kids, we might be able to break the cycle of violence.
