Bri Mahon, a 31-year-old mom from California, recently shared her story on TikTok about her unexpected colon cancer diagnosis. She had been experiencing digestive issues and fatigue for years, which she initially thought were due to Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). After giving birth to premature twins, she noticed blood in her stool, but she attributed it to stress and anxiety. It wasn't until the symptoms persisted that she decided to see a doctor. Her doctor ordered a colonoscopy, which led to her stage three colon cancer diagnosis.
Colon cancer is typically associated with older adults, but recent research shows that younger people are also at risk. This year, the American Cancer Society predicts that about 13% of new colorectal cancer cases will be in adults under 50. The exact cause of colon cancer in younger adults is still unclear, but factors like diet, alcohol consumption, and lifestyle may play a role.
Dr. Amit Garg, a board-certified hematologist/oncologist, explains that common symptoms of colorectal cancer include abdominal pain, diarrhea, rectal bleeding, and unexplained iron deficiency anemia. He emphasizes that persistent symptoms should not be ignored and urges anyone with unusual abdominal symptoms to get checked out by a doctor.
Bri's treatment plan includes two rounds of chemotherapy and radiation, followed by surgery to remove the remaining part of the tumor. She hopes her story will encourage others to pay attention to their bodies and seek medical help if something feels off.
