Youth Sports Champion: LA84’s New Play Push
Los Angeles, California, USA,Fri Apr 03 2026
The 1984 Los Angeles Olympics left a lasting gift: the LA84 Foundation.
It started with $93 million in profits and now gives more than $250 million to youth sports groups in Southern California.
Last Thursday, the foundation held its eighth Play Equity Summit.
The goal: fix the problems that stop kids from playing sports.
They called it “Play Because it Matters. ”
Renata Simril, the foundation’s chief executive, said the best arenas are schoolyards and street corners.
She warned that paying to play is turning youth sports into a $20‑billion business, leaving many kids out.
Her message was clear: “Play equity is the only P. E. that counts. ”
Simril urged people to act differently.
She remembered learning tennis on a cracked street court in Carson High.
With big events like the World Cup, Super Bowl and Olympics coming to Los Angeles soon, she sees a chance to make sports matter for everyone.
She wants new programs that last.
More partnerships, more sponsorships, and more access will keep kids playing.
Profit can grow while the purpose stays strong.
Finally, she stressed how sports help boys and girls prepare for life.
Playing builds skills that last beyond the field.
