Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky believes that if Russia stops attacking Ukrainian energy infrastructure, it might signal Moscow's readiness to end the war. In a recent talk with journalists, he highlighted that both sides reducing their strikes on energy facilities could help cool down the conflict. Since February 2022, Russia has been relentlessly targeting Ukraine's energy infrastructure with missiles and drones, making this coming winter tough for Ukraine. On the other side, Ukraine has successfully hit Russian oil facilities with drone strikes, causing issues for Russia's war efforts.
Zelensky sees a potential path to peace in a mutual agreement to stop these attacks. "During the first peace summit, we saw that energy security could be a deciding factor, " he told reporters. "If we agree not to attack each other's energy infrastructure, could this lead to an end of the war's active phase? I believe so. "
This month, Zelensky presented a five-point "victory plan" to the U. S. , including Ukraine's potential NATO membership and further security guarantees to prevent another Russian attack. However, there's growing pressure on Zelensky to find a negotiated end to the war, especially with the U. S. elections coming up. Zelensky thinks Russia's willingness to negotiate hinges on the U. S. election outcome.
His office has started working on an action plan to help Ukraine endure the war, covering military, political, economic, and law enforcement issues. This plan is expected to be revealed to the public by the end of the year.
