2025 was a year of triumphs and setbacks, but high school athletes from Boulder, Broomfield, and Longmont areas stood out. Let's dive into some of the most unforgettable moments from the past year.
In February, the swim and dive championships saw Holy Family's Lorelai Frauenfelder making history. She won gold in both the 50-yard and 100-yard freestyle events, becoming the first Tiger to achieve this feat. Meanwhile, Boulder's Hazel Huilman also made waves, winning the 5A 100 butterfly and 100 breaststroke. The Monarch swim team secured the runner-up spot in the 4A state championships, with Broomfield and Centaurus following closely.
The wrestling mat saw Broomfield's Shayla Martinez making history as the first BVSD champion in girls' wrestling. She pinned her opponent in just over a minute, finishing her season with an impressive 29-1 record.
On the basketball court, Boulder boys basketball clinched their first league title since 2016, thanks to senior Cole Morrow's stellar performance. The Panthers made it to the postseason for the first time in four years. Meanwhile, Prospect Ridge Academy boys basketball made a historic run to the final four, fueled by a strong senior class.
In May, Monarch's Gavin Keogh and Ethan DiFronzo each won 4A state titles in individual events, and the swim team secured a state title. The girls tennis team from Peak to Peak also made waves, claiming the Class 3A team tournament title.
The track and field championships saw Niwot dominating, with the girls winning their sixth straight championship and the boys securing their first since 2021. Holy Family's Claire Tannehill and Legacy's Annalina Torres also made their mark with gold medals in their respective events.
In the fall, Niwot gymnastics repeated as the Class 4A state champions, led by Evie Saunders. The boys cross country team also made history, repeating their national title at the Nike Cross Nationals with the lowest-ever boys score since the event began.
