Local Officers' Testimony Highlights Communication Chaos Amid Trump's First Assassination Attempt

The investigation into the near-assassination of Donald Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania, has revealed a convoluted communication system that contributed to the chaos on July 13. Local officers testified that multiple groups of officers were on different radios, separate from the Secret Service's channel, which led to miscommunication and delays. The hearing, which was initially intended to be a bipartisan effort, was overshadowed by a second panel featuring two Republican representatives who presented conspiracy theories about the shooting. Local officers described the communication issues as a major problem on the day of the assassination attempt. They explained that reports of a man on the roof went out to different channels, but never made it to the Secret Service agents on Trump's detail. The officers also highlighted the limitations of the cell phone system, which was operating well in the wake of the 9/11 attacks, but was spotty and became an issue for local officers as they tried to share early pictures of the shooter.The lack of meetings with the Secret Service and no direction on certain areas of coverage, including the buildings the shooter climbed, were also cited as contributing factors to the chaos. The task force, which has been investigating the assassination attempt, has previously visited the rally site in Pennsylvania and has met with and interviewed local and federal officers involved in the security and subsequent investigations. The hearing came the day after a bipartisan committee in the Senate released a damning report highlighting key failures by the Secret Service on the day of the assassination attempt. The report blamed the lack of decision-making and leadership structure for significant lapses in security measures, including a denial of resources and lack of decision-making around who was responsible for what area of the rally.
