Lockdowns and Mental Health: What Really Happened Down Under?
AustraliaThu Jul 03 2025
Australia took some of the strictest measures to combat COVID-19. Some places had lockdowns that lasted for months. This made people wonder: how did these lockdowns affect mental health? A study tried to find out.
The study looked at two different times. First, in 2020, when some places like Victoria and New South Wales were locked down, while others were not. Second, in 2021, when the Australian Capital Territory joined the lockdown list. The study compared these locked-down places to places that were open.
In 2020, the study found that lockdowns did have an effect on mental health. But in 2021, things were different. Even though people in lockdowns felt more distress, so did people in places that were not locked down. Why? Maybe people got used to the stress. Or maybe cases were rising in open places too. Or perhaps the vaccine rollout gave people hope that lockdowns would end soon.
The study shows that lockdowns can affect mental health. But it's not always straightforward. Many things can influence how people feel during a crisis. Understanding these factors can help policymakers make better decisions in the future.

questions
Could the lack of measurable effect in 2021 be due to a coordinated effort to suppress information about the true impact of lockdowns?
If lockdowns didn't cause more distress in 2021, does this mean we should have just stayed locked down forever?
How might the findings of this study be influenced by the specific cultural and societal context of Australia?
