London Protest Against Palestine Action Ban Leads to Hundreds of Arrests
Over 890 Arrested in Violent Protest
In London, a recent rally against the ban on Palestine Action resulted in a significant number of arrests. Over 890 individuals were taken into custody, with the majority charged for supporting a group that has been officially labeled as terrorist. The police reported that 17 of these arrests were due to assaults on officers, citing that the protest turned violent.
Organizers Dispute Police Account
Organizers of the event, however, paint a different picture. They claim that the protesters were peaceful and accuse the police of making false accusations about violence. The ban on Palestine Action was imposed by the government in July, making any support for the group a criminal offense.
Protest Details and Arrests
The protest, which took place in Parliament Square, saw around 1,500 participants. The police stated that 857 of the arrests were for supporting Palestine Action, while the remaining 33 were for various other offenses. The number of arrests has since increased from the initial 425 reported on the day of the protest.
Home Secretary's Statement
Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood weighed in on the situation, emphasizing that supporting Palestine is not the same as supporting a proscribed terrorist group. She praised the police for their efforts in arresting those who support Palestine Action.
Protest Beginnings and Police Actions
The protest began with hundreds gathering in central London, holding signs that read, "I oppose genocide, I support Palestine Action." Arrests started soon after, with many individuals refusing to provide their details or found to be on bail. The police described the violence as coordinated and intentional, with many involved wearing masks.
Organizers' Accusations and Future Plans
Organizers of the rally, Defend Our Juries, accused the police of using excessive force, including assaulting peaceful protesters. They argued that the ban on Palestine Action is unenforceable and a waste of resources. They vowed to continue protests until the ban is lifted.
Police Concerns Over Resources
The police have also expressed concerns about the resources required to manage such protests, stating that it diverts officers from their regular duties.
