In the eastern part of India, a single-tusked elephant has been causing chaos. Over the past few weeks, it has killed 22 people in Jharkhand. The elephant has been moving around at night, attacking villages in the West Singhbhum district. The first attack happened on January 1st in Bandijhari village. Since then, many people have been hurt or killed, including a family of four and a forest worker. The area is now on high alert. People in Chaibasa district, where the elephant was last seen, are told to stay away from forests and not go out at night. Officials think the elephant is a young male who got separated from his herd. They have tried to tranquilize it three times but failed. The elephant moves fast, covering about 30 km a day. Over 100 forest workers are trying to find it, but they haven't succeeded yet.
Experts from other states are also helping, but the elephant's unpredictable movements make it hard to track. This problem is part of a bigger issue. Human-elephant conflicts are increasing in India. Deforestation, lack of food and water, and people moving into elephant areas are some reasons. Many elephant corridors, which are safe routes for them to move, no longer exist. Elephants are also dying from things like electrocution, train accidents, and poisonings. In the last five years, more than 2, 800 people have died from elephant attacks. Some places, like Andhra Pradesh, are using AI to warn villages about elephants. This helps protect both people and elephants. The current situation in Jharkhand shows how important it is to find solutions to these conflicts.
