Did you know that some artists don't start creating art until they're adults? Lorraine O’Grady is one of those people. Born in Boston in 1934, she was the daughter of Jamaican immigrants who valued education. She grew up near the public library, spending lots of time reading and writing. Before becoming an artist, she had different jobs like a research economist, a translator, and even a rock critic. Talk about a varied career!
Lorraine didn't start making art until she was in her 40s. She didn't have just one style, either. She worked with collages, photos, performances, videos, and installations. She was open to trying anything! Lorraine also didn't shy away from tough topics like race and gender. Being a Black woman, she faced challenges in the art world. She wasn't fully accepted in the white art scene, and in the Black art world, she was often sidelined because she was a woman. This made it hard for people to understand her art.
Even though her art career didn't take off right away, Lorraine's unique perspective inspired many younger Black artists. She passed away at the age of 90, leaving behind a legacy that's only starting to be fully appreciated.
