Love Scams: A Bill to Protect Online Daters
USAMon Jan 06 2025
Online dating has become a big part of many people's lives, but it's also a playground for scammers. Last year, over 64, 000 Americans were tricked into giving away over $1 billion in romance scams. That's double the amount from just four years ago! A 66-year-old woman named Sue was one of these victims. She had saved $2 million for her retirement and was looking for love on Match. com. She met someone who claimed to be a UK private equity investor and called himself Santos. After some sweet-talking, Santos asked Sue for $40, 000 to renew a professional license. Sue didn't think much of it and happily gave the money. But that was just the start. Sue was taken for a wild ride of lies and emotional abuse, and in the end, she lost all $2 million.
Now, you might be thinking, why didn't Match. com protect Sue? Well, dating apps are not doing enough to warn users about scammers. That's where the Online Dating Safety Act comes in. Two lawmakers, a Democrat from Colorado and a Republican from California, have teamed up to introduce this bill. The idea is simple: dating apps must tell users if they've been chatting with a known scammer. This way, people like Sue can avoid falling into the same trap. The bill has already passed the House, but it needs more time in the Senate.
Sue wishes she had known about Santos' true intentions. She believes that if Match. com had warned her, she wouldn't have lost all her money. Match Group, the company behind Match. com, has started rolling out fraud notifications. They also say they'll work with senators to finalize the bill. But for Sue, the damage is already done. She's sharing her story to prevent others from going through the same nightmare.
