MAGNET: Building Better Medicine Habits for Dementia Care

Community SettingsFri Oct 16 2026

Many folks living with mild-to-moderate dementia find managing their medicines really tough. Standard programs tend to focus mainly on sticking to a schedule, but they miss bigger challenges like spotting side effects or catching dosing errors. Researchers felt it was time for a smarter approach that addresses the full picture.

The team chose an Experience-Based-Co-Design method to create the MAGNET project. This meant bringing together people with dementia, their family caregivers, and health professionals. They showed a film about everyday struggles with medication, then ran a priority-setting session to decide what to tackle first. Over six separate workshops, participants helped shape solutions. A celebration event wrapped up the process and collected feedback.

The finished package contains a step-by-step guide, a short instructional video, and a handy reminder card. These tools target five important themes: how dementia impacts organizing meds, learning about your own prescriptions, getting help when needed, addressing problems quickly, and preparing for the future. By centering real voices in the design, the program feels more relevant and usable for its users.
