Maine Diner and Gift Shop Go Up for Auction After Years of Success

Wells, Maine, USAFri May 08 2026
For over 60 years, the Maine Diner in Wells has been a local favorite, serving up classic comfort food to generations of visitors and residents alike. Now, the restaurant and its attached gift shop face a major change. The property, including a 3. 5-acre lot and an 80-seat dining area, is set to go under the hammer at a foreclosure auction on June 4. This comes just months after the diner was first put on the market for $3. 3 million.
Current owner Jim MacNeill, who took over in 2018, insists business will carry on as usual despite the sale. He’s even hinting at retirement after decades in the restaurant world. In an April post, MacNeill and his wife Karen mentioned they’re reviewing offers to find the best match for staff and customers. The diner, open Thursday to Saturday from 7 a. m. to 8 p. m. , is also gearing up for summer by hiring new workers. But with an auction looming, its future feels uncertain. The diner’s story stretches back to the 1960s when Socrates “Louie” Toton first opened its doors. Over the years, it’s earned spots on TV shows like “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives” and NBC’s “Today, ” boosting its reputation far beyond Maine. Yet even with that fame, financial challenges have led to this moment.
