Maine Teens Feel Better, Drink and Smoke Less
Maine, USAWed Nov 26 2025
In Maine, high school students are in a better place these days. They're feeling less down and using fewer substances. This is what a recent survey found out. The survey happens every two years. It checks on students' well-being and spots areas that need work.
The survey showed that fewer students feel sad or hopeless for long stretches. In 2023, 35% felt this way. But in 2025, it dropped to 28%. This is a good sign. It shows that mental health is improving. Not just sadness, but also thoughts of suicide went down. This is the kind of trend everyone wants to see.
When it comes to drinking and smoking, teens are making better choices. Fewer students had a drink in the past month. In 2023, 20. 5% did. But in 2025, it was down to 16. 5%. Cannabis use also went down. From 18. 7% in 2023 to 14. 6% in 2025. Even vape pen use dropped from 15. 6% to 13%.
Why are these changes happening? It's hard to point to one thing. But after COVID-19, people talk more about mental health. Teens feel okay asking for help. And adults are more aware of what's going on with the young people around them.
Schools are also doing more. Almost all schools now have mental health programs. In 2022, 88% did. But in 2024, it's up to 97%. This is a big deal. It shows that schools are taking mental health seriously.
But there are still concerns. More students are using dissolvable tobacco and nicotine pouches. Also, girls and LGBTQ+ students feel sad more often than boys. This shows that some groups need more support.
The state is working on a campaign called Filter Out the Noise. It teaches students to spot when they or a friend are struggling. And to reach out to a caring adult. This adult doesn't have to be a parent or teacher. Anyone can be there for a young person.
The most important thing is for adults to be present. Show up for young people. Make them feel valued. Let them know they can trust you. This is how we keep kids safe and healthy.
